What is DRIFT?
A 5-minute introduction for anyone trying to figure out whether DRIFT is the answer to their problem.
Smart people make hard decisions under pressure every day. Air traffic controllers. Mission review boards. Race strategists. Emergency coordinators. When they get it right, no one notices. When they get it wrong, the consequences are sometimes catastrophic.
DRIFT is built for those moments. Not to take the decision away from the person making it, but to make the decision visible — to show them what they are actually choosing between, what is pushing back, and how much time they have before the choice closes.
The problem with most AI today
Most AI products try to give you an answer. You ask a question, the system tells you what to do.
That works fine for low-stakes decisions like which restaurant to try or which email to send next. It works very poorly for high-stakes decisions where the person making the choice is held accountable for the outcome.
So a paradox emerges: in exactly the situations where intelligent help would be most valuable, the people who would benefit can't actually use what current AI is offering. They need something different.
What DRIFT does instead
DRIFT does not tell you what to decide. DRIFT shows you the landscape your decision is sitting on.
Imagine you are standing at the edge of a forest at night, trying to figure out which path to take. Most AI products would shout a direction at you. DRIFT instead hands you a map: here is the terrain, here are the obstacles, here is where each path leads, here is which paths are still open and which are closing.
You still choose the path. But now you can see what you are choosing.
A concrete example
A controller is working a busy approach pattern. Twelve aircraft are inbound. Weather is shifting. One pilot has reported a minor mechanical issue. Another is asking for a different runway.
A traditional AI assistant might say: "Recommend clearing aircraft 4 to runway 27R." The controller has to decide whether to trust that recommendation. If they do and something goes wrong, they own the outcome but not the reasoning.
DRIFT instead shows a structured picture: which decisions are still flexible, which are nearly locked, what each option would close off, how confident the system is in each piece of information feeding the picture. The controller still makes every call. But they make it with the full landscape in front of them, not in their head.
That is the essential shift: from "what should I do?" to "what am I actually choosing between?"
The same idea, in any domain
The example above is air traffic control, but the underlying idea has nothing to do with airplanes. It works for any domain where:
— A human is accountable for the decision
— The decision is made under pressure
— Multiple options exist but the window for choosing is closing
— Some information is more trustworthy than other information
That same shape shows up in mission reviews at NASA, in autonomous drone swarms, in race strategy, in litigation, in emergency management, in regulatory enforcement. The specific data is different. The decision shape is the same.
DRIFT is built around that shape. The engine does not know or care what domain it is operating in.
Why this matters now
Two trends are running into each other.
On one side, AI capability is growing rapidly. Systems can reason, recommend, and increasingly act on their own. On the other side, the situations where we want AI involved are getting more consequential — autonomous vehicles, defense systems, medical triage, infrastructure decisions. The stakes are climbing.
The standard answer is "human in the loop." A human checks the AI's work before action. But that answer fails in practice, because the human cannot see what the AI saw. The human ends up rubber-stamping recommendations they don't fully understand.
The human reads the landscape. The AI reads the same landscape. They reason in a shared visual space. The human still decides. But now the AI can answer questions, surface what's been missed, and flag what's changing — without ever taking the call.
What you can actually do with it
DRIFT supports three modes, depending on what the situation calls for:
Decisions made together. The human is in charge. The AI is available to consult — to answer specific questions, surface blind spots, or stress-test an option — when the human asks. This is the default mode for high-stakes work.
Decisions made alone. The human decides without AI input, but DRIFT still renders the landscape so the decision is visible to the rest of the team and reviewable later. This is for situations where the human has all the information they need, but the decision needs to be auditable.
Decisions automated. When the resistance is bounded — meaning DRIFT can confirm that all paths in the immediate option space are within pre-approved limits — the system can act on its own. This is for routine, well-characterized situations where human attention should be reserved for the harder calls.
The same engine handles all three modes. Which mode is appropriate for which decision is not DRIFT's call. It is the operator's.
What DRIFT is not
DRIFT is not a chatbot. It does not have a conversation with you.
DRIFT is not a recommendation engine. It does not tell you what to do.
DRIFT is not a surveillance tool. It does not generate performance metrics on the people using it.
DRIFT is not magic. It produces a structured picture from the data and constraints you give it. If your inputs are wrong, the picture will reflect that. The framework is designed to make wrong inputs visible rather than hiding them.
